Creating Your First Matter
A matter is the central unit in Digiiworks Legal — it represents a case or engagement and ties together clients, documents, time entries, invoices, and deadlines.
Creating a Matter
- Navigate to Matters and click New Matter.
- Fill in the required fields:
- Matter title — A descriptive name (e.g., "Nkosi v Nkosi — Divorce")
- Client — Select an existing client or create a new one
- Matter type — Choose from your configured categories (custody, maintenance, divorce, commercial, etc.)
- Responsible attorney — Assign the lead lawyer
- Click Create — your matter is now active and ready for work.
What You Can Do Within a Matter
- Documents — Upload and organise case files securely. See Uploading and Organising Documents.
- Time entries — Log billable hours against this matter. See Time Tracking and Billable Hours.
- Notes — Add case notes that are automatically timestamped.
- Deadlines — Set court dates, filing deadlines, and compliance due dates. See Deadline Tracking and Compliance Alerts.
- Invoices — Generate invoices from tracked time. See Invoicing Clients and Tracking Payments.
Converting a Lead
If a prospect came through the intake chatbot, you can convert them directly. See Managing Leads for the full workflow.
Tips
- Use consistent naming conventions for matter titles — this makes searching much easier.
- Set deadlines immediately when you create a matter. Digiiworks will send automated reminders at 14, 7, and 1 day before each deadline.
- Assign matters promptly so the responsible attorney receives notifications.
