Time Tracking and Billable Hours
Accurate time tracking is the foundation of fair billing. Digiiworks Legal makes it easy to log time and convert it into invoices.
Logging Time
There are several ways to record time:
- Manual entry — From any matter, click Log Time and enter the date, duration, and description.
- Timer — Start a timer when you begin working and stop it when you're done. The duration is calculated automatically.
- Automatic tracking (Practice tier+) — Certain actions are logged automatically: document uploads, email processing, and matter updates.
Time Entry Fields
Each time entry includes:
- Date — When the work was performed
- Duration — In hours and minutes (e.g., 1h 30m)
- Description — What was done (e.g., "Drafted demand letter and reviewed client documents")
- Matter — Which case the work relates to
- Billable — Toggle whether this time is billable or non-billable
Viewing Time Reports
Navigate to Billing → Time Entries to see:
- All time entries across matters, filterable by date range, attorney, and matter
- Total billable vs. non-billable hours
- Unbilled time that hasn't been invoiced yet
Converting to Invoices
- Go to Billing → Invoices → New Invoice.
- Select the matter — unbilled time entries are pulled in automatically.
- Review, adjust if needed, and send.
See Invoicing Clients and Tracking Payments for the full invoicing workflow.
Tips
- Log time the same day it occurs — reconstructing timesheets at month-end leads to under-billing.
- Use descriptive entries. "Research" tells the client nothing; "Researched maintenance court precedent for opposing party's application" justifies the charge.
- Review the unbilled time report weekly to avoid revenue leakage.
